My inspirations come from all over the world, and from various points in Earthís history. Iíve had an interest in archaeology ever since I first watched Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981, and read books about Howard Carterís discovery of King Tutankhamunís tomb back in 1922. Iíve marvelled at the complex cave paintings made by primitive Man over 30,000 years ago, and squealed with delight the first time I saw the macabre, overtly sexual paintings by HR Giger, in his first published art book, Necronomicon (1977). I love the cozy interiors of homes from ancient Greece, Egypt, Turkey, Africa and South America with their use of rich, vibrant colours, just as much as I love the sleek and edgy neutrals found in Scandinavian and Industrial design. My passion for medieval art and architecture, with its breathtaking stained glass windows and grotesque stone gargoyles, is just as strong as my fascination with the mid-century modern interiors of Frank Lloyd Wright. Iím literally all over the map when it comes to my taste in art, architecture and design Ė but I do have to admit that my interests lean more towards the bizarre and eclectic as opposed to the safe and practical (meaning Iíd rather spend a weekend in my studio making a life-sized replica of an ancient Egyptian mummy than painting a picture of a vase full of flowers, such as the one on the green wall in the photo, below.
